Jesus: “Rise by serving.”

How has your upbringing shaped your view of success and love?
Have you ever transferred worldly ambition into your spiritual life?
I. Everyone Wants to Be Great
James and John ask to sit at Jesus’ right and left.
Observation: Ambition is human but can be spiritually dangerous.
Why is it hard to see the danger in ambition?
How do we “play politics” in Christian settings?
Whose glory am I really seeking—God’s or my own?
II. The Cup of Suffering
Jesus asks if they can “drink the cup” of suffering.
Key Insight: Seeking significance without surrender leads to pride and conflict. What unhealthy needs might drive your service?
How have you seen competition fracture unity?
How does jealousy reveal misplaced ambition?
When power becomes the goal, people become the obstacle.
III. The World’s Way vs. Jesus’ Way
World: Hierarchy, domination, authority.
Jesus: Servanthood, humility, love.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
Reflection: Is influence becoming your identity?
IV. Why Serve?
Benefits:
Makes us more like Jesus
Humbles our pride
Shifts focus from self to others
Creates space for God’s presence
Questions:
Why is serving good for you?
How have you been blessed while serving?
How could servant-hearted living transform our church/community?
Application: Moving From Leading to Serving
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
Where is God inviting you to move from self-advancement to service?
What specific need could you respond to this week?
Ask someone: “What do you want?” or “Is there anything I can do for you?”
